It’s been a difficult week on the chicken front and the financial front. Things look good at the bank, but there is a big difference between what you can get and what you can truely afford, once you come to look at it with open eyes. The big picture fiscal reality hit me when I realized that I couldn’t afford a land survey right now because I have to go back to the UK for a couple of weeks and the exchange rate is terrible. So when could I afford it? Just looking forward made me realize that a few things need to come into place (like more money) before I could begin the building process beyond the research and planning stage. So we have chickened out for right now.

lucyOn the chicken front, news has also not been good. Lucy’s chick that she had been hatching died in the shell. I gave her two live day old bantam chicks, and she looked briefly confused but took them on in an instant. She sat tight with them and clucked away until they knew her as mother. Unfortunately, the little white one died two days later, possibly because Penguin, the large black Astralorp took the poor little thing up by the leg and was about to kill it off right there and then- until I got her by the throat that is. Did she ever look surprised. Penguin now lives on a lovely farm free ranging with chickens of her own rather large size. As of writing the other chick is holding strong.

So I think I’ll focus on updating our current house to get more equity out of it. That will feel like a move forward at least. I can feel a bathroom revamp coming on.
